Rebirth of the cool
METROPOLIS CINEMA - BEIRUT | Architectural Acoustics
Cinema environments demand a high degree of acoustic precision, where dialogue clarity, frequency balance, and consistency across seating positions are critical to the audience experience. For Metropolis Cinema, acoustic simulations and predictive modeling were used early in the design process to inform treatment strategies and ensure the space could support both film soundtracks and spoken content as intended.
CHALLENGES
- Designing an acoustics environment that feels as natural as possible, unlike traditional commercial cinemas
- Working on a very tight budget to help bring this project back up to life during the most difficult economic situation
STRATEGIES
- Side and back walls fully absorbing down to 100Hz + reflective ceiling made with suspended acoustic reflectors with an absorbing back side acting as bass absorbers
- Specifying locally-sourced finishing material and low cost sound insulation boards to achieve the desired acoustics environment

ACOUSTIC SIMULATION DATA

Acoustic simulations were used to evaluate reverberation time and energy distribution across seating areas and frequency bands critical to cinematic playback. By analyzing frequency-dependent reverberation and spatial consistency between receiver positions, the simulations informed acoustic treatment decisions to ensure clarity of dialogue, controlled low-frequency buildup, and a balanced cinematic experience throughout the auditorium. This predictive approach helped align the acoustic response of the space with the performance requirements of film soundtracks and spoken content.
