CINEMA AKIL @ 25h - DUBAI | Architectural Acoustics + Noise Containment

When it comes to creating an outdoor cinema in a complex urban setting it does not get any more challenging and complex than this.

How to provide enough sound containment within the venue so that neighbors are not disturbed while keeping the outdoor cinema feel was a challenge of its own kind. These are the types of projects that move us to the core.

The result was achieved through a deconstructed architectural intervention, where parts of the walls and ceiling of a carefully studied acoustic shell were taken apart and offset from the main skin of the cinema, creating a superb acoustic setting for movie goers while controlling excessive sound energy from spreading out.

CHALLENGES

  • Creating an intimate cinema feel in an outdoor setting
  • Containing sound within the perimeter of the venue

STRATEGIES

  • Highly absorbing acoustic shell, deconstructed to preserve the cinema's outdoor feel
  • Absorbing walls of outdoor space around the cinema shell to further control sound energy escaping from the shell

ACOUSTIC 3D MODEL WORK

ACOUSTIC SIMULATION DATA

A detailed 3D acoustic model was developed to study the spatial behavior of sound within the cinema environment and to evaluate the interaction between room geometry, surface treatments, and sound reflections. Acoustic simulations were used to analyze reverberation characteristics, reflection patterns, and energy distribution across critical listening positions. This predictive modeling informed acoustic treatment strategies aimed at preserving dialogue intelligibility, tonal balance, and spatial clarity—ensuring a consistent and immersive cinematic experience throughout the auditorium.
